Chapter 1 - The Road to War

The engine of my 1999 Chevy Silverado roared to life with a familiar, mechanical growl that vibrated through the floorboards. I shifted into reverse, tires spinning against the loose gravel of my driveway before catching traction and launching the heavy truck down the winding Virginia backroads. In the passenger seat sat the heavy black canvas field bag I had pulled from the cedar footlocker—a bag containing my old tactical breaching bar, heavy-duty flex-cuffs, and an encrypted satellite comms link that connected directly to men who had served with me in the darkest corners of the globe.
As I pushed the speedometer past eighty, my knuckles turned white against the cracked leather steering wheel. My mind raced back through the last five years, dissecting every subtle change in Sarah’s demeanor that I had foolishly chalked up to the stress of her high-society lifestyle. I remembered how she used to look me in the eye with fierce, unshakable confidence, a young woman who had grown up moving from base to base, never afraid to stand her ground. Julian Vance had systematically stripped that girl away, replacing her with a nervous, hyper-vigilant shadow who flinched whenever a door slammed too loud.

He had played the long game, isolating her from her old university friends, convincing her that her military father was too rigid and judgmental to understand their corporate world. He had built a fortress of wealth and intimidation around her, using his philanthropic reputation as an impenetrable shield against suspicion. Nobody would ever suspect a man who donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to children’s hospitals of throwing his own wife against a wall on Thanksgiving afternoon.
The autumn wind whipped through the partially open window, carrying the chill of late November, but inside the cab, my blood was boiling. I reached over with my right hand and unzipped the top pocket of the field bag, my fingers brushing against the cool plastic of the encrypted satellite phone. I didn't just need to rescue my daughter today; I needed to ensure that Julian Vance’s entire empire was dismantled brick by brick. By the time the ornate iron gates of the Vance estate appeared on the horizon, my rage had crystallized into something far more dangerous: cold, calculated military precision. He thought he was untouchable behind his money, but he was about to learn what happens when a Marine decides to bring the war to his front door.
