Chapter 16 - The Cornered Rat

Despite the overwhelming weight of the federal indictment, Julian’s high-priced legal team managed to exploit a temporary procedural loophole during the initial magistrate arraignment on Tuesday afternoon. By pledging his personal yacht and three unencumbered commercial properties as collateral, they secured his temporary release on a ten-million-dollar bond, under the strict condition of electronic ankle monitoring and a total, absolute restraining order barring him from coming within one thousand feet of Sarah or my family.

When the news of his bail release hit our monitors at the mountain cabin, Marcus immediately ordered the perimeter security locked down to DEFCON 1. We knew Julian’s psychological profile all too well; a narcissist of his magnitude, stripped of his public reputation and facing total financial ruin, wouldn't retreat quietly to his lawyers' offices. He would seek immediate, violent retribution against the woman who had destroyed his illusion of absolute control.

At two o'clock on Wednesday morning, the perimeter motion alarms along the eastern tree line of the cabin triggered with a sharp, rhythmic chirp. I was sitting by the stone fireplace, cleaning my Colt .45 service pistol, while Rossi and Chen monitored the exterior infrared cameras from the tactical console.

"We have movement," Chen said, his voice cold and analytical as he zoomed in on the thermal imaging feed. "Three vehicles just breached the lower timber gate with their headlights extinguished. We're looking at eight to ten individuals on foot, moving up the ridge toward the cabin in tactical formation. They’re carrying suppressed automatic weapons."

"He hired mercenaries," Rossi said, grabbing his customized Remington shotgun from the weapon rack. "Probably rogue private contractors hired off the books with offshore cash. He thinks he can eliminate the witnesses before the federal grand jury convenes next week."

I stood up, racking the slide of my pistol with a metallic clack that sounded like finality. I looked over at Sarah, who was sitting upright on the sofa, her face calm, showing none of the paralyzing terror that used to govern her life.

"Get into the reinforced interior panic room with David," I told her firmly, handing her a backup 9mm Glock from my belt. "Lock the steel vault door from the inside and do not open it for anyone except me or Marcus. We'll handle the trash on the lawn."

Sarah took the weapon, her eyes locking onto mine with proud, warrior strength. "Give him hell, Dad."
