Chapter 3 - The Fractured Mask

The Dubai deal closed forty-eight hours later, bringing an unprecedented ninety-million-dollar windfall to Sterling Enterprises.
Julian had kept Elena at his side for two straight days of nonstop video conferences, negotiations, and contract drafting.
It was Friday night at 9:30 PM when the final digital signature was secured, leaving the executive suite empty except for the two of them.
Elena sat on the leather sofa in Julian’s office, rubbing her temples as a brutal migraine pounded behind her eyes.
She reached up and took off her thick-framed glasses, setting them on the glass coffee table to rub her sore bridge.
Without the heavy frames, her large, hazel-green eyes were arresting, framed by dark, natural lashes that she normally kept hidden.
She reached behind her head and pulled out the tight hairpins that held her severe braid in place, letting out a soft sigh of relief.
A cascade of rich, chestnut hair tumbled down over her shoulders, catching the warm amber glow of the city lights outside the floor-to-ceiling windows.
“Why do you hide, Elena?”
She froze, her hands mid-air in her hair, looking up to see Julian standing by his wet bar with two crystal glasses of scotch.
He walked over and set one glass on the table in front of her, his gaze locked onto her face with an intensity that made her pulse race.
“I don't hide, Mr. Sterling,” she said, her voice lacking its usual professional deference due to sheer exhaustion. “I dress appropriately for work.”
Julian sat on the opposite end of the sofa, leaning forward with his elbows on his knees, studying her like a masterpiece he had just uncovered.
“You wear clothes three sizes too large, glasses with non-prescription glare coatings, and you speak as if you apologize for breathing,” he said calmly.
Elena’s heart pounded against her ribs; she hadn't realized he was observant enough to notice the lenses were just glare-cutters, not medical prescriptions.
“In this city, Mr. Sterling, a woman who looks like me and has a brain like mine doesn't get promoted,” she said bitterly, looking out at the skyline. “She gets preyed upon, or she gets dismissed as a novelty.”
May you like
Julian reached out, his warm fingers brushing a stray lock of chestnut hair away from her cheek, his touch lingering against her olive skin.
“No one in this city has the power to dismiss you anymore, Elena,” he whispered. “Not while I am watching.”
