Chapter 7 - Freezing The Assets
Marcus’s expensive defense attorney stood up to argue for bail.
“Your Honor, my clients are respected members of the community and pose no flight risk,” the lawyer claimed.
The judge let out a harsh, mocking laugh.
“Respected members of the community do not attempt murder in a crowded hospital,” the judge fired back.
“Furthermore, the prosecution has presented undeniable evidence of massive financial fraud.”
My lawyer, Victoria, stood up with a massive stack of banking records.
“Your Honor, we have tracked the stolen funds from my client's estate,” Victoria stated.
“Marcus Vance was actively preparing to wire forty million dollars to an offshore account in the Cayman Islands.”
The courtroom gasped in shock.
Evelyn whipped her head around to stare at her son.
“You were going to run away without me?” Evelyn shrieked, forgetting where she was.
Marcus tried to shush her, but the damage was already done.
“Given the severity of the violent attack and the massive flight risk, bail is denied for both defendants,” the judge ruled.
He slammed his gavel down with finality.
“Additionally, all assets belonging to Marcus and Evelyn Vance are hereby frozen immediately.”
I let out a breath I didn't know I had been holding.
