Chapter 2 - The Web Of Lies

“What is going on here?” a tall, broad-shouldered officer demanded.

His name tag read Sergeant Miller, and his eyes quickly scanned the bloody scene.

Marcus immediately shifted his posture, raising his hands in a gesture of helplessness.

“Officer, thank God you are here,” Marcus lied smoothly.

“My wife is suffering from a severe manic episode and tore out her own medical lines.”

Evelyn practically glided down the stairs to join her son’s performance.

“It was terrifying, officer,” she whimpered, clutching her chest.

“She just snapped and lunged at me, and then she lost her footing.”

Sergeant Miller frowned, looking down at my battered, bleeding body on the floor.

“Is this true, ma'am?” he asked me gently.

I coughed, tasting copper in my mouth.

“No,” I rasped, my voice barely above a whisper.

“She pushed me.”

Marcus let out a condescending sigh, running a hand through his hair.

“She is heavily medicated and completely delusional, Sergeant,” Marcus insisted.

“Just look at the security cameras if you don't believe me.”

Marcus pointed confidently toward the black camera domes, knowing they were disabled.

“The hospital administration told me the system has been down since Monday,” Marcus added smugly.

Sergeant Miller pulled out his notepad, looking frustrated by the contradictory stories.

“If the cameras are down, this is a he-said-she-said situation,” the Sergeant muttered.

That was the exact moment I slowly uncurled my bloody fingers.

The silver flash drive gleamed under the bright fluorescent lights.

“The main system is down,” I said clearly.

“But the backup drive caught every single second.”
