Chapter 4 - The Stolen Legacy

“You cannot arrest me!” Marcus screamed as the cold steel snapped around his wrists.

“I am a respected wealth manager in this city!”

Evelyn began backing away slowly, hoping to slip through the distracted crowd.

“Don't let her leave!” I shouted, pointing a shaking finger at my mother-in-law.

“She has stolen documents in her bag!”

Two officers immediately intercepted Evelyn, grabbing her arms before she could reach the exit.

“Get your filthy hands off my cashmere coat!” Evelyn shrieked.

Sergeant Miller approached her and forcefully pulled the designer tote bag from her shoulder.

He opened it and pulled out the thick red folder my private investigator had compiled.

“What is this?” Miller asked, looking through the legal documents.

“Those are the forged deeds to my grandmother's estate,” I explained, tears of relief pricking my eyes.

“She falsified my signature to transfer fifty million dollars of property to Marcus.”

Miller looked at the documents, then looked at the two furious, handcuffed suspects.

“Well, it looks like we are adding grand larceny and felony fraud to your charges today,” Miller announced.

Marcus glared at me with a hatred so deep it chilled me to the bone.

“You will pay for this,” Marcus threatened darkly.

“No, Marcus,” I whispered back.

“You already took everything you could, and now I am taking it back.”

The officers roughly escorted the screaming mother and son out of the clinic doors.

The paramedics finally moved in, lifting me gently onto a stretcher.
