Chapter 2 - Uncovering The Scars

The moment she was gone, David locked the deadbolt and turned to his son.

“Leo, buddy, I need to see your arm,” David said gently.

Leo hesitated before slowly rolling up the sleeve of his favorite superhero shirt.

David gasped, feeling a physical pain in his chest.

There were fresh, angry red welts, but beneath them were faded yellow and purple bruises.

“How long has this been happening?” David asked, fighting back tears.

Chloe stepped forward, wiping her wet cheeks.

“Since you started working late on the new company project,” she whispered.

“She said if we told you, you would send us away to boarding school.”

David felt a sickening wave of guilt wash over him.

He had hired Samantha into his firm two years ago, fallen for her charm, and invited her into their lives.

He thought she loved them.

“Nobody is ever sending you away,” David said fiercely.

He picked up his phone and dialed his sister, Sarah, a pediatric nurse.

“Sarah, I need you at the house right now,” he said, his voice cracking.

Within twenty minutes, Sarah arrived and carefully examined the children.

She documented every bruise and mark with her camera.

“David, you have to take this to the police,” Sarah said, her face pale with fury.

“I will,” he replied, his jaw clenched tightly.

“But first, I am going to make sure she can never come within a hundred miles of them again.”

That night, David sat by their beds until they finally fell into a restless sleep.

The battle was just beginning.
