Chapter 9 - The Collapse

David returned to the freezing, dark condominium completely broken and utterly defeated.
Claire was waiting for him, wrapped in three heavy blankets, shivering violently on the couch.
"Did you fix it? Did you call the bank? My friends are coming over for brunch tomorrow!" she shrieked.
David looked at his horrible, greedy wife, finally seeing her for the monster she truly was.
"There is no money, Claire. There never was any money. It was all my mother," he whispered numbly.
Claire paused, dropping the heavy blankets, her eyes widening in pure confusion.
"What are you talking about? Your mother is a useless, broke old hag!"
"My mother is a multi-millionaire, Claire. She owns this entire building. She owns the company that pays my salary."
Claire literally stopped breathing for a few seconds, her mind unable to process the horrific information.
"We abused a billionaire. We threw a billionaire out into the street," David laughed, a manic, crazy sound.
Claire jumped up, her face twisting into a mask of pure, unadulterated rage.
"You idiot! You let me hit her! Why didn't you tell me she was loaded?" she screamed, slapping his chest.
"We could have inherited everything! We could have been set for life, you stupid, worthless man!"
David grabbed her wrists, shoving her backward with a sudden, vicious burst of anger.
"Pack your bags, Claire. We are being evicted, and I have exactly two hundred dollars to my name."
