Chapter 11 - The Job Loss

David thought the eviction was the worst thing that could possibly happen to him.

He rented a filthy, roach-infested motel room on the bad side of town, using the last of his credit.

The next morning, he put on his only clean suit and took the public bus to his corporate job.

He walked into the massive glass building, desperate to secure an advance on his upcoming paycheck.

When he reached his desk, he found a cardboard box sitting directly in the center of his chair.

His boss, a stern man named Mr. Harrison, walked over with a grim, serious expression.

"Pack your things, David. Your employment here has been terminated effectively immediately," Harrison stated loudly.

David felt the room spin, gripping the edge of the desk to stop himself from collapsing.

"What? Why? I am your top salesman! You can't just fire me without a reason!" David panicked.

"Our firm was acquired last night by a private equity group," Harrison explained, adjusting his tie.

"The new CEO personally reviewed the roster and demanded your immediate termination with zero severance."

"Who? Who bought the company?" David asked, his voice barely a terrified whisper.

Harrison pulled a memo from his pocket and read the name aloud to the entire silent office.

"Apex Holdings LLC. Now, please leave the building before I call corporate security."

David grabbed his miserable cardboard box and walked out, realizing he was entirely trapped in my web.

There was absolutely nowhere he could hide where my wealth and influence could not completely destroy him.
