Chapter 1 - The Awakening

The heavy mahogany door slammed shut behind me, echoing loudly in the pristine, marble-floored hallway.
I stood there in the dead silence, staring at the polished wood that separated me from my only child.
The crumpled fifty-dollar bill in my trembling hand felt like a physical burn against my skin.
My temple throbbed with a vicious, rhythmic agony where Claire’s wooden ladle had struck my flesh.
A single drop of blood trickled down my jaw line, splashing softly onto the collar of my faded, worn-out cardigan.
For an entire decade, I had played the role of a pathetic, dependent old woman just to stay close to David.
I had swallowed my pride, endured their sneers, and quietly paid for their luxurious lifestyle from the shadows.
I thought my unconditional love would eventually thaw the ice in my son's heart.
Tonight, I finally understood that David did not have a heart left to thaw.
I slowly walked toward the private elevator, my posture straightening with every single step I took.
I was no longer the fragile widow begging for table scraps in her own condominium.
I pulled out my outdated cellular phone and dialed a private number I had memorized years ago.
"Sterling," the deep, professional voice of my wealth manager answered on the second ring.
"Richard, it is Margaret. I need my private driver sent to the downtown luxury lofts immediately," I said.
There was a brief pause on the line as he processed the sudden authority returning to my voice.
"Right away, Mrs. Vance. Shall I prepare the penthouse at the Grand Plaza for your arrival?" he asked.
"Yes, and Richard, I need you to freeze all dummy accounts linked to David's residence," I instructed coldly.
"Cancel the utilities, the HOA auto-payments, the property taxes, and the grocery stipends."
May you like
"Consider it done, Margaret. Is there anything else you require tonight?"
"Yes. Call the firm and have eviction notices drafted for tomorrow morning," I replied, stepping into the night.
