Chapter 6 - The Discovery
The following morning, David marched into the downtown municipal building, desperate for answers.
He demanded to see the property records for his condominium, convinced it was a massive clerical error.
The clerk handed him a thick stack of printed documents detailing the history of the building.
David’s eyes rapidly scanned the pages, searching for any mention of his own name.
Instead, he found the registration details for Apex Holdings LLC, the company that owned his home.
He flipped to the very last page, looking for the name of the primary shareholder and CEO.
His heart completely stopped beating in his chest.
Printed in bold, undeniable black ink was a single name: Margaret Vance.
"No. No, that is impossible," David muttered out loud, his hands trembling uncontrollably.
"My mother is a poor, retired school teacher. She doesn't own a multi-million dollar corporation."
The clerk looked at him with a mixture of pity and extreme annoyance.
"Sir, Margaret Vance owns fifteen commercial and residential properties in this district alone," the clerk stated dryly.
David stumbled backward, bumping into a large marble pillar, unable to catch his breath.
His mind flashed back to the previous night, watching Claire smash a heavy wooden ladle into his mother's head.
He remembered handing her a single fifty-dollar bill and throwing her out into the freezing night.
He had just evicted a woman who was quietly worth tens of millions of dollars.
