Chapter 4 - The Notice

At precisely noon, a loud, aggressive knock echoed through the luxury condominium.

Claire, still fuming from her humiliating morning at the boutique, marched to the front door.

She yanked it open, expecting to see a delivery driver holding her expensive imported groceries.

Instead, she was greeted by a stern-faced process server and two uniformed police officers.

"Claire Vance?" the process server asked, holding a thick manila envelope in his hand.

"Yes? What is the meaning of this? You cannot just harass people in this building!" she demanded.

"You are being formally served," the man stated, shoving the heavy envelope directly into her chest.

Claire ripped it open, her eyes scanning the complex legal jargon with growing confusion and panic.

It was a thirty-day notice to vacate the premises, citing massive unpaid arrears and lack of legal tenancy.

"This is a joke! We own this condo! My husband is an executive!" she shrieked at the officers.

"According to the city registry, ma'am, this property is owned by Apex Holdings LLC," the officer replied calmly.

"Your names are not on the deed, and the actual owner wants you out immediately."

Claire’s hands began to shake violently as the reality of the terrifying legal document set in.

She slammed the door in their faces and immediately called David, screaming in absolute hysterics.

"David! They are trying to evict us! Some company called Apex Holdings says they own our house!"

David felt the blood drain entirely from his face, his stomach twisting into painful, sickening knots.

He had always assumed his mother somehow scrounged up the money to rent the place for them out of guilt.

He had absolutely no idea that Apex Holdings was a shell corporation created solely by his mother.

The fake, luxurious bubble they had ruthlessly protected was suddenly bursting right before their eyes.
