Chapter 8 - Trapped in the Web

The police cruisers blocked their rented sedan, trapping them on my property.
Officers swarmed the porch with their hands on their holsters, shouting commands.
My mother tried to play the victim, crying heavily and claiming I was holding Nana hostage.
The lead officer, Sergeant Miller, had already been briefed by Marcus earlier in the week.
He didn't buy a single word of her theatrical sobbing.
I opened the door slightly, just enough to hand Sergeant Miller a fresh copy of the protective order.
My father tried to lunge at me, but two officers tackled him into the frozen rose bushes.
He cursed my name as they ratcheted the steel cuffs around his wrists.
My mother was hyperventilating, begging me to tell the police it was a misunderstanding.
I looked her dead in the eyes and closed my front door without saying a single word.
I watched the rest of the arrest from the comfort of my heated living room.
They were shoved into the back of separate squad cars, their faces pressed against the glass.
Nana was sipping her tea, looking incredibly peaceful for a woman whose children were just arrested.
