Chapter 1 - The Trap is Set

The sun had barely broken the horizon when Marcus arrived at my door.

He was wearing a sharp, tailored suit despite the ungodly hour.

Marcus was the kind of estate litigator who could smell blood in the water from a mile away.

I poured him a cup of black coffee and led him into the living room where Nana was resting.

The private caregiver, a stern but gentle woman named Beatrice, was already checking Nana’s vitals.

Marcus opened his leather briefcase and pulled out the thick stack of financial records I had printed.

He took one look at the highlighted discrepancies and let out a low whistle.

My parents had not just been skimming from her retirement accounts; they had been draining her entire life savings.

They had forged her signature on multiple property deeds over the last three years.

Nana looked down at her frail hands, tears welling in her eyes as the reality of their betrayal set in.

I held her hand tightly and promised her that they would never hurt her again.

Marcus looked at me with a predatory grin and asked if I was ready to ruin their lives.

I didn't even hesitate before telling him to freeze every single asset they had.

The trap was officially set.

By noon, my parents would try to buy their morning lattes and find their platinum cards declined.

I could almost taste the panic they were about to feel.

They thought they were the predators in this family dynamic.

They were about to learn that they had just stepped into a cage with a monster.
