Chapter 17 - Letting Go of the Past

Marcus called me out of the blue on a Tuesday afternoon.

He informed me that the state had officially auctioned off my parents' mansion.

The proceeds went directly back into Nana's foundation for elderly victims.

A young, loving family had bought the property and were completely renovating it.

It felt poetic that a house built on greed was going to be filled with genuine love.

Nana and I took a quiet drive past the old neighborhood just to see it one last time.

The massive gates were open, and children were playing in the front yard.

Nana smiled gently and told me that the darkness had finally been washed away.

We drove back to our countryside estate without a single backward glance.

I threw a massive Thanksgiving dinner that year, inviting Marcus, Beatrice, and a few close friends.

There were no snide comments about my career, no insults about my cooking, no tension.

We raised our glasses and toasted to new beginnings and ironclad boundaries.

It was the best holiday I had ever experienced in my entire life.
