Chapter 5 - A Public Spectacle

Day seven brought the first true act of desperation from Richard and Susan.

They took a public bus—something my mother swore she would rather die than do—to my law firm.

They bypassed the front desk and tried to storm into the private elevators.

Security intercepted them immediately, pinning my father against the marble wall when he swung a fist.

I was pulled out of a deposition to handle the disturbance in the lobby.

When I stepped off the elevator, my mother fell to her knees and began sobbing violently.

She begged me to lift the freeze, claiming they couldn't even buy groceries.

I stood there, wearing a three-thousand-dollar suit, looking down at the woman who threw her mother out in a blizzard.

I told her in a voice as cold as ice that she should have thought of that before stealing millions.

The entire lobby of junior associates and wealthy clients watched the spectacle in stunned silence.

My father spat a curse at me, calling me an ungrateful, venomous child.

I smoothly handed the security chief a copy of the restraining order.

The police were called, and my parents were handcuffed for violating a court order and trespassing.

I went back up to my deposition without a single hair out of place.

I felt absolutely nothing for them but profound disgust.
