Chapter 3 - Absolute Zero

Three days passed in absolute silence, a heavy calm before the inevitable storm.

Nana was thriving under Beatrice’s care, eating warm meals and sleeping without fear.

The color returned to her cheeks, and her hands finally stopped shaking.

On the fourth morning, a process server approached my parents' sprawling suburban mansion.

I watched the event unfold live through a hidden camera the investigator had legally placed near their street.

My father opened the front door wearing his silk bathrobe, looking arrogant and annoyed.

The server handed him a stack of legal documents thicker than a phone book.

I watched his face drop as he read the cover page detailing the emergency injunction.

He stumbled backward, dropping his expensive cigar onto the welcome mat.

My mother appeared behind him, snatching the papers away to read them herself.

Even through the grainy camera feed, I could see the exact moment her world collapsed.

They were officially locked out of every bank account, investment portfolio, and credit line.

More importantly, the court had issued a restraining order preventing them from coming within five hundred feet of Nana.

They had exactly zero dollars to their name.

The SUV they drove away in was financed under Nana's name, which meant the repo men were already on their way.

I took a sip of my coffee and smiled at the monitor.

Justice was a dish best served absolutely freezing.
