Chapter 2 - The Well Runs Dry

Four thousand miles away in the Maldives, the sun was shining, and my mother was about to have a very bad day.
I sat at my kitchen island with David, our laptops open, watching the digital footprint of my family's "grief." According to their social media, they were currently enjoying a private yacht excursion. The yacht cost twelve thousand dollars a day. It was billed to a corporate card my mother had bullied Thomas into giving her three years ago.
"Hit it," I told David.
David pressed a key. Instantly, sixteen different credit accounts, offshore holding funds, and shell companies tied to my family's name were frozen, flagged for fraudulent activity, and locked.
Thirty minutes later, my phone began to buzz frantically. The caller ID flashed: Mom - Maldives. I let it ring. It rang again. Then a text came through. Elena, the resort is saying our cards are declining. There must be an error with the bank. Call your account manager immediately. This is terribly embarrassing.
I poured myself a cup of black coffee, watching the rain beat against my window. I typed a single reply.

There is no error. The accounts are frozen pending a forensic audit. Enjoy the rest of your trip.
I turned my phone on airplane mode, tossed it onto the counter, and turned back to David. "Now, we file the injunctions."
