Chapter 11 - No Mercy

My mother stared at the glowing screen, her face crumpling in shame. "We were foolish. We were wrong. But you can't leave us on the street, Elena. I'm your mother."
"You were a parasite," I corrected, my voice cold as ice. "A parasite that fed on my husband's brilliance and my son's future. When they died, you didn't even have the decency to stand by their graves. You drank champagne. You told me the trip was nonrefundable."
"Elena, please..."
"Your house is foreclosed. Julian is going to prison. And if you ever approach me, my firm, or these graves again, I will release the rest of the files on that drive, and you will join Julian in a federal cell."
I turned my back on her and walked toward my car.
"You're a monster!" she screamed into the quiet graveyard. "You're unnatural!"

"No," I whispered to myself, opening my car door. "I'm just the architect you never saw coming."
I drove away, leaving her standing alone in the dark, with nothing but the consequences of her own greed for company.
