Chapter 15 - The Ending

A year to the day after the accident, the weather was finally beautiful. The Seattle sky was a brilliant, cloudless blue.
I walked into the cemetery, the grass green and vibrant. I carried a massive bouquet of sunflowers—Thomas's favorite—and a small toy race car for Leo.
I sat on the bench across from their headstones. The agony that had once threatened to tear me apart had softened into a quiet, enduring love. I missed them with every breath I took, but the rage was gone. The screaming in my head had been replaced by peace.
I had protected them. I had protected what we built.
My phone buzzed in my pocket. It was an email from David about a new philanthropic initiative we were launching. I smiled, typing a quick, affirmative reply.

I looked at the names carved into the stone. Thomas Brooks. Leo Brooks. Beloved Husband. Beloved Son.
"We did it," I whispered into the warm breeze, placing the toy car on the grass. "You can rest now. I've got it from here."
