Chapter 9 - The Fall of the Traitors

The NYPD detectives stepped forward, pulling out their handcuffs.
"Elena Vance and Marcus Sterling," the lead detective said, "you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, attempted murder, and massive corporate fraud."
"He's a cripple!" Marcus screamed as the cuffs clicked around his wrists. "He can't run a company! He can barely speak! We built that empire while you were rotting in a bed, Alex!"
Alexander slowly raised his right hand. It took immense effort, his muscles trembling under the strain, but he managed to point his index finger directly at the door.
"Get... out," Alexander commanded.
As Elena and Marcus were dragged out of the room, screaming and crying, the flashing lights of the police cruisers illuminated the hospital window. The press outside captured every humiliating second of the traitorous wife and the greedy CFO being shoved into the back of a squad car.
The nightmare was finally over. Alexander closed his eyes, taking a deep, unassisted breath of fresh air.
He felt a tiny hand grab his trembling fingers. He looked down to see Sofia, holding the little plastic container where she kept her ladybug.

"You did good, Mr. Alex," she smiled.
Alexander looked at the little girl, and then at her mother, who was crying quiet tears of relief. "No," he whispered softly. "We did."
