Chapter 1 - The Blinking Ghost

“Pull the plug right now,” Elena demanded, stepping toward the life-support machinery. Her eyes were fixed on the ventilator, completely ignoring the tears streaming down her husband's face.

“Step away from the patient!” Dr. Evans barked, his voice echoing with absolute authority. He placed his body between Elena and the bed. “The patient’s vitals are spiking. His brain activity is lighting up the monitors. He is conscious.”

Marcus scoffed, adjusting his custom Italian suit. “That’s impossible. Four different neurologists diagnosed him as vegetative. This is just a muscle spasm. You have the court order, Doctor. Execute it.”

Dr. Evans didn't move. He leaned over Alexander, shining a penlight into his dilated pupils. "Alexander. If you can hear me, blink twice."

The room went dead silent. Even the storm outside seemed to hold its breath. Elena’s perfectly manicured hands clenched into fists.

Slowly, agonizingly, Alexander’s eyelids fluttered. One blink. A pause. Two blinks.

Rosa gasped, covering her mouth, while little Sofia clapped her hands quietly.

Elena’s face drained of all color. The mask of the grieving, exhausted wife slipped for a fraction of a second, revealing the sheer terror beneath. Marcus physically took a step backward, his eyes wide with disbelief.

"The injunction is null and void," Dr. Evans said coldly, snatching the legal documents from the hospital administrator's hands and tearing them in half. "This man is awake. And until I run a full diagnostic, no one touches him."
