Chapter 6 - The Night Nurse

Elena and Marcus weren't stupid. They sensed the resistance from the hospital staff. They knew Dr. Evans was hiding something.

On Thursday night, twenty-four hours before the scheduled transfer, Dr. Evans was mysteriously called away to a multi-car pileup in the ER. Rosa was on another floor.

A new nurse walked into Room 518.

He didn't wear a Mount Sinai ID badge. He was built like a heavyweight boxer, and he carried a syringe filled with clear liquid. He walked straight to Alexander's IV line.

Alexander's eyes snapped open. He couldn't scream. He couldn't fight.

The hitman locked the door and inserted the needle into the port.

Suddenly, the heavy door handle rattled. "Housekeeping!" Rosa’s voice called out.

"Come back later!" the fake nurse shouted.

Rosa didn't walk away. She remembered Marcus's voice in the stairwell. She keyed her master janitor override card and shoved the door open. She saw the needle. She saw the man.

Without a second of hesitation, Rosa swung her heavy, industrial mop bucket right at the man's knees. Boiling hot, chemical-laced water splashed across his legs. He howled in pain, dropping the syringe.

Rosa hit the emergency code blue button on the wall, screaming at the top of her lungs. Security flooded the room seconds later, tackling the hitman to the floor before the lethal dose could enter Alexander's veins.
