Chapter 3 - The Transom Threat

By sunrise, the legal war began.

Elena returned to Mount Sinai Memorial with a team of corporate lawyers. If she couldn't pull the plug, she was going to control the environment.

"We are transferring my husband to a private, at-home hospice facility," Elena announced to the hospital director. "Mount Sinai's media exposure is too high. He needs privacy for his 'recovery'."

Dr. Evans fought back aggressively. "He is in a fragile neurological state. Moving him could trigger a fatal seizure. He requires 24/7 specialized ICU monitoring."

But Evans knew he couldn't stall forever. Elena had the marriage certificate; she had the medical proxy. It was only a matter of days before she legally forced Alexander out of the hospital and into a private estate where Marcus and a bribed doctor could quietly finish the job with a lethal injection of potassium.

Down in the basement, Rosa overheard Marcus talking on his burner phone in the service stairwell.

"Just get the private ambulance ready for Friday night," Marcus hissed into the phone. "The moment we get him to the Hamptons house, we handle it. Nobody survives four years on a ventilator without heart complications. It will look completely natural."

Rosa pressed her back against the cold concrete wall, her heart hammering. She knew the golden rule of immigrants working night shifts: keep your head down and stay out of rich people's business.

But then she thought of Sofia. She thought of Alexander's tears. Rosa pulled out her cheap smartphone and hit record.
