Chapter 5 - The Penthouse Cage

Within forty-eight hours, Clara’s entire world had been dismantled, boxed up, and relocated to Gabriel’s triplex penthouse on Upper Fifth Avenue.

The residence was a fortress of luxury, featuring private elevator access, a wraparound terrace overlooking Central Park, and a staff of silent, highly efficient professionals.

Her new bedroom was larger than the entire Queens apartment she had shared with Lucas, decorated in soft creams, cashmere throws, and custom silk draperies.

When she slid open the walk-in closet, she gasped out loud; it was filled from floor to ceiling with designer dresses, tailored power suits, and casual luxury wear all in her exact size.

Gabriel had not simply hired a fiancée; he had curated an entirely new identity for her with terrifying, surgical precision.

A soft knock at the bedroom door startled her out of her thoughts, and a moment later, Gabriel walked in holding a small, velvet-covered box.

He was dressed in a dark gray suit, looking every inch the ruthless corporate master as he approached her in the center of the luxurious room.

“The surgical team at Mount Sinai just called my office,” Gabriel said, stopping a few feet away from her. “Lucas’s bone marrow transplant was completed an hour ago. The preliminary prognosis is excellent.”

A wave of profound relief crashed over Clara so violently that her knees buckled, forcing her to grab the edge of the marble dressing table for support.

“He’s okay?” she whispered, tears of genuine gratitude finally breaking through her stoic exterior. “The donor marrow took?”

“He is resting comfortably in the sterile recovery suite,” Gabriel confirmed, his tone unexpectedly gentle as he watched her cry.

“You can visit him tomorrow morning, but tonight, we have our first public appearance at the Metropolitan Opera House.”

He stepped forward and opened the velvet box he was carrying, revealing a ring that made the breath catch painfully in Clara’s throat.

It was an flawless, five-carat emerald-cut diamond set in a platinum band, flanked by two tapered baguettes that caught the chandelier light with blinding brilliance.

“Give me your left hand, Clara,” Gabriel requested softly, taking the ring from its velvet setting.

Clara hesitated, extending her trembling hand toward him as if she were stepping across a boundary she could never retreat from.

Gabriel’s warm, dry fingers cradled her cold hand, his thumb sweeping gently over her knuckles before he slid the heavy ring onto her finger.

The fit was absolute perfection, binding her physically to the lie they had fabricated for the rest of New York society to consume.

“Remember,” Gabriel whispered, his eyes meeting hers as he held her hand just a second longer than necessary. “From this moment on, you adore me.”
