Chapter 19 - The New Foundation

One year after their wedding, Gabriel and Clara stood together on the stage of the Carlyle Regency ballroom—the exact same room where they had first met.
The amber glass chandeliers cast the same opulent glow across the terrazzo floor, but this night, Clara wasn't wearing a stiff black service vest or serving champagne.
She wore a breathtaking emerald silk evening gown, standing at the podium as the co-chair and director of the newly established Thorne-Hayes Medical Foundation.
“Two years ago, I stood in this very room as a server, terrified because my brother was dying and I couldn't afford to save his life,” Clara spoke into the microphone, her voice ringing with passion and clarity across the silent crowd of five hundred wealthy donors.
“No family should ever have to choose between financial survival and the life of someone they love.”
She gestured toward the massive projection screens above the stage, displaying the names of two hundred pediatric and transplant patients whose treatments had been fully funded by their foundation over the past year.
The ballroom erupted into a thunderous, standing ovation, with donors pledging millions of dollars to support her cause within minutes of her speech ending.
Gabriel stood waiting for her at the edge of the stage, looking infinitely proud as she stepped down from the podium and walked into his open arms.
“You conquered the entire city tonight, Clara,” Gabriel whispered, kissing her forehead as applause continued to echo around the ballroom.
“We conquered it together, Gabriel,” she smiled, taking his hand and interlocking their fingers as they walked back toward their main table.
As they passed a service station, Clara paused, looking at a young, tired server who was adjusting her apron with exhausted eyes.

Clara reached into her clutch, pulling out a personal foundation card and pressing it gently into the young woman’s hand with a warm, understanding smile.
“If you ever need a second chance,” Clara whispered kindly to the stunned girl, “call that number. We are always here to help.”
