Chapter 10 - The Family Estate

Two weeks after Lucas’s successful surgery, the real test of Gabriel and Clara’s contractual deception officially arrived on a crisp Friday afternoon.

Gabriel’s private helicopter landed on the sprawling manicured lawn of the Vance-Sterling family estate in rural Connecticut for a weekend summit.

The estate was a massive Tudor-style mansion surrounded by acres of autumn foliage, private lakes, and centuries of old-money snobbery.

As Clara stepped out of the helicopter, shielding her eyes from the rotor wash, she could feel the immediate weight of judgment awaiting them inside.

Gabriel took her hand firmly in his, interlocking their fingers as they walked toward the grand stone entrance where the family matriarch stood waiting.

Eleanor Vance was a woman of seventy with posture like a steel rod, silver hair styled into an immaculate French twist, and eyes as sharp as broken glass.

“Gabriel,” Eleanor said by way of greeting, extending a single, withered hand adorned with an antique sapphire ring. “You finally arrived.”

“Eleanor,” Gabriel replied respectfully, kissing the back of her hand before stepping aside to present Clara. “Allow me to introduce my fiancée, Clara Hayes.”

Eleanor’s piercing blue eyes swept over Clara from the crown of her simple, elegant updo to the hem of her tailored woolen coat.

“Ms. Hayes,” Eleanor murmured, her tone completely neutral. “My nephew Julian has told me quite a bit about your... humble beginnings in the city.”

Clara felt Gabriel’s grip tighten slightly around her fingers, but she didn't wait for him to defend her against the old woman’s veiled insult.

“There is nothing humble about hard work, Mrs. Vance,” Clara said clearly, meeting the matriarch's gaze with calm, unwavering self-respect.

“I am proud of where I come from, and I don't believe a bank account is the sole measure of a person’s character.”

Silence fell over the stone portico, so heavy that the rustling of the autumn leaves in the courtyard sounded like thunder.

For a terrifying five seconds, Clara thought she had completely destroyed Gabriel’s three-billion-dollar merger within thirty seconds of landing.

Then, suddenly, the corners of Eleanor Vance’s mouth twitched upward, turning into a rare, genuine smile of approval.

“Well,” Eleanor declared, stepping back to gesture them inside the warmth of the mansion. “It seems you finally found a woman with a backbone, Gabriel.”

As they crossed the threshold into the grand foyer, Gabriel leaned his head down, his lips brushing against Clara’s earlobe in a whisper.

“Remind me to double your compensation bonus when we get back to New York,” Gabriel murmured proudly. “You are magnificent.”
