Chapter 4 - The Business of Deception

Gabriel walked over to the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking out over the glittering skyline of lower Manhattan before answering her question.

“Next month, Thorne Capital is initiating the acquisition of Vance-Sterling Media, a family-owned conglomerate worth over three billion dollars,” Gabriel explained calmly.

“The controlling shareholders are notoriously traditional, deeply skeptical of corporate raiders, and they refuse to sell their legacy to a bachelor they view as unstable.”

He turned back to face her, the ambient city light casting sharp, dramatic shadows across his high cheekbones and tailored vest.

“My PR team tried to engineer a suitable pairing with a socialite, but the press saw through the arrangement within forty-eight hours,” Gabriel continued.

“I need someone who isn't from my world. Someone grounded, authentic, and utterly convincing to a board of conservative family matriarchs.”

“And you think the girl who slapped you in front of fifty donors is the right candidate for the job?” Clara asked, shaking her head in disbelief.

“I know you are,” Gabriel said, walking back to the desk and tapping the leather folder with absolute, unshakeable confidence.

“You possess a fierce, protective integrity that cannot be manufactured in a public relations boardroom, Clara. When you care about something, you fight for it.”

He looked her straight in the eye, stripping away the intimidation tactics to reveal the cold, calculated arithmetic of the bargain.

“Sign the contract, live in my home as my fiancée for six months, help me secure the Vance-Sterling deal, and then walk away completely free.”

“And Lucas?” Clara whispered, her eyes drifting back to the signature line that held her brother’s entire existence in its balance.

“The moment your name is on that paper, the Mount Sinai surgical team will begin preparing the operating room for his transplant,” Gabriel promised.

Clara stood in the quiet office for a long time, weighing the sacrifice of her own freedom against the steady, fading beep of Lucas’s heart monitor.

There was no real choice to make, and both of them knew it from the very beginning of the conversation.

She picked up the heavy platinum pen resting beside the folder, her hand trembling so violently that the tip scratched against the parchment.

Without saying another word, she signed her name on the dotted line, sealing her fate to the Midas of Wall Street for the next half-year.

Gabriel watched her sign, a strange, unreadable expression softening his dark eyes for a fraction of a second before the professional titan returned.

“Welcome to Thorne Capital, Clara,” he murmured, taking the pen from her fingers. “Your new life begins tonight.”
