Chapter 15 - The Matriarch's Decision

Eleanor Vance stood in the center of the library, holding the exposing legal documents in her hands as she looked between Gabriel, Clara, and her smug nephew.
Julian was grinning triumphantly, waiting for his aunt to summon security and cast Gabriel Thorne out of their family estate forever.
Instead, Eleanor slowly walked over to the stone fireplace, tossed the entire manila folder into the crackling flames, and watched the papers burn to ash.
“Aunt Eleanor! What are you doing?!” Julian screamed in absolute shock, stepping toward the hearth as if he could rescue the burning evidence.
“I am cleaning up my family's garbage, Julian,” Eleanor said coldly, turning a freezing, disdainful glare onto her trembling nephew.
“You bribed corporate employees, stole medical records of a dying teenager, and physically assaulted a woman under my roof simply to satisfy your own greed.”
She pointed a withered, trembling finger toward the heavy oak doors of the library, her voice ringing with undisputed matriarchal authority.
“Pack your belongings and leave this estate immediately, Julian. You are stripped of your board seat, and your trust fund is frozen effective Monday morning.”
Julian opened his mouth to protest, but the sheer, terrifying finality in his aunt's eyes silenced him completely before he turned and fled the room.
Once the door clicked shut, Eleanor walked over to the sofa where Gabriel was holding Clara close against his side.
“You took a massive risk playing games with my family, Gabriel,” Eleanor said, her tone softening slightly as she looked down at the bruised young woman.
“I know, Eleanor,” Gabriel replied humbly, a rare concession from the titan of Wall Street. “And I am ready to accept whatever terms you decide for the merger.”
Eleanor smiled softly, reaching out to gently touch the top of Clara’s dark hair with surprising maternal kindness.

“The merger was approved ten minutes before you kicked my doors down, Gabriel,” Eleanor revealed smoothly.
“I didn't sign because I thought you were a stable family man. I signed because I saw the way you look at this girl, and I knew a man who could love someone with that much fierce devotion would protect my family's legacy with his life.”
