Chapter 11 - The Dinner Table Interrogation

The formal dining room of the Vance estate was lit by antique silver candelabras that cast flickering shadows across a mahogany table set for twelve.
Clara sat to Gabriel’s right, wearing a sophisticated burgundy silk dress that made her dark hair and warm complexion look positively regal.
Across the table sat Julian Vance, his pale eyes glaring at her over his crystal wine glass with a toxic mixture of resentment and suspicion.
As the first course of roasted butternut squash soup was served, Eleanor Vance leaned forward from the head of the table, fixing Clara with an inquiring look.
“So, Clara, my dear,” Eleanor began, her voice carrying clearly over the polite clinking of silverware. “Tell us how you and Gabriel first crossed paths.”
The entire table fell silent, every executive and family member turning their attention toward Clara to hear the origin story of the Midas of Wall Street.
Clara felt Gabriel’s hand slip beneath the heavy linen tablecloth, his warm palm resting reassuringly on her knee to anchor her nerves.
“We met at a charity gala at the Carlyle Regency, Mrs. Vance,” Clara said smoothly, taking a sip of her water to moisten her dry throat.
“I was actually working that night, serving champagne to the donors, when Gabriel walked over to my station.”
A collective, scandalous gasp rippled around the table; admitting she had been a hired server was a massive breach of high-society protocol.
Julian Vance let out a cruel, mocking laugh from across the table, shaking his head with an expression of triumphant malice.
“A server?” Julian sneered openly. “Good lord, Gabriel, did you pick your future bride out of a catering catalog to save on consulting fees?”
Before Gabriel could rise from his chair to tear Julian apart, Clara placed her hand over Gabriel’s beneath the table, squeezing his knee firmly.
“Actually, Julian, I refused to serve him at first because I thought he was arrogant,” Clara continued with an effortless, charming laugh that captivated the room.
“Gabriel spent the next three weeks trying to prove to me that there was a real human being behind the corporate predator headlines.”
She turned her head to look at Gabriel, her eyes softening with a genuine affection that surprised even her own heart.
“He showed me that true strength isn't about how much money you control, but about how fiercely you protect the people you care about.”

Eleanor Vance watched the exchange, her sharp blue eyes softening as she looked at the undeniable, electric chemistry vibrating between the two of them.
“A remarkable story,” Eleanor said firmly, silencing Julian with a single, freezing glare. “It is rare to find such honesty in this industry anymore.”
