Chapter 9 - The Return

I drove to the old Sterling Logistics headquarters on a bright, sunny Wednesday morning.

It was the exact same building I had been locked out of just a few months prior.

As I walked through the double glass doors, the remaining staff fell dead silent.

They remembered how I had been treated, and they knew I was now the sole owner of the building.

I didn't gloat, and I didn't demand an apology from anyone who had stayed behind.

“Good morning, everyone,” I announced to the nervous crowd.

“Sterling Logistics is dead, but Apex Freight is hiring, and we have a lot of cargo to move today.”

A collective sigh of relief washed over the room, followed by spontaneous applause.

I walked down the main hallway toward the executive suites.

The silver letters that used to spell 'Office of the CEO - Rachel Sterling' had already been scraped off the glass.

I walked inside and threw my briefcase onto the massive oak desk.

The view of the Portland skyline was beautiful, but it meant nothing compared to the freedom I felt.

Julian knocked on the door frame, holding two cups of expensive coffee.

“Welcome home, boss,” he smiled, handing me a cup.

“It feels a lot better than home,” I replied, taking a sip.
