Chapter 7 - The Begging Game

That evening, the doorbell rang just as I was putting Mia to bed.

I opened the door to find my mother standing there alone in the dark.

She looked small and fragile, completely stripped of her usual commanding aura.

“May I come in?” she asked, her voice trembling slightly.

“The kids are sleeping, Mom,” I lied, not wanting her toxic presence in my sanctuary.

“Sarah, please,” she begged, tears welling up in her eyes.

“If you force this liquidation, you will destroy our family’s legacy.”

“You destroyed the family legacy the night you let Rachel put your grandchildren in a corner,” I stated firmly.

“I was trying to keep the peace!” she cried out.

“Rachel has always been so fragile, so needy... I thought you were the strong one.”

“I am the strong one,” I agreed, staring her down.

“And I am using that strength to protect my children from being treated like garbage by their own blood.”

“We can fire Rachel,” she offered desperately.

“I'll make you CEO tomorrow, just please, drop the lawsuit.”

It was the offer I had dreamed of for ten years, but hearing it now just made me feel sick.

“It’s too late, Mom. The company is ruined, and I already built my own.”

I gently but firmly closed the door, locking it and turning off the porch light.

It was the hardest thing I ever had to do, but it was also the most necessary.
