Chapter 6 - The Boardroom Coup

The official summons for an emergency board meeting arrived via certified mail.
Because I still owned forty percent of Sterling Logistics, I had a legal right to be there.
I walked into the glass-walled boardroom wearing a sharp navy suit, projecting absolute confidence.
My mother sat at the head of the table, looking ten years older than she had at her retirement dinner.
Rachel sat next to her, nervously shredding a paper napkin under the table.
“We have called this meeting to discuss the immediate liquidity crisis,” the chief financial officer began.
“Revenues are down sixty percent, and we are facing lawsuits from three major vendors.”
Evelyn cleared her throat and looked directly at me.
“Sarah, we are willing to offer you your old job back, with a ten percent raise.”
“You will report to Rachel, of course, but we need your help to stabilize the network.”
I looked around the table at the grim faces of the board members.
“I am not here for a job, Mother,” I said smoothly.
“I am here to execute the forced buyout clause in my shareholder agreement.”
“We don't have the cash to buy you out!” Rachel blurted out in panic.
“I know,” I replied, pulling a thick legal document from my briefcase.
“Which is why Marcus has filed a petition to force the liquidation of company assets to satisfy the debt.”

The boardroom erupted into chaos, shouting and pointing fingers.
I just sat back in my leather chair, perfectly calm, watching the empire they stole crumble to dust.
