Chapter 2 - The Rude Awakening

The weekend passed in beautiful, uninterrupted peace for me and my children.
We went to the park, watched movies, and didn't talk about Sterling Logistics once.
But Monday morning brought a furious pounding on my front door.
I opened it to find Rachel standing on my porch, her designer suit wrinkled and her face flushed with rage.
“What the hell did you do, Sarah?” she screamed, trying to push her way inside.
I stood my ground, blocking the doorway with my arm.
“I simply asked the company lawyer to enforce the contracts you signed, Rachel.”
“You cut off our fuel lines and our warehouse leases!” she yelled, her voice echoing down the suburban street.
“No, I stopped personally guaranteeing the debts of a company that locked me out of its system.”
“Mom is furious, and she says if you don’t call the vendors right now, she’s writing you out of the will.”
I laughed out loud, a genuine, bitter laugh that caught my sister entirely off guard.
“Keep the inheritance, Rachel, because you are going to need it when that company goes bankrupt.”
“You are bluffing,” she sneered, though her trembling hands betrayed her panic.
“Call Marcus,” I said, stepping back to close the door.
“He has my formal demand for a buyout of my forty percent equity, payable in thirty days.”
I slammed the door in her face and locked the deadbolt.

Through the window, I watched her storm back to her luxury car, furiously typing on her phone.
The war had officially begun, and I was holding all the heavy artillery.
