Chapter 9 - Desperate Measures

The gala emptied in record time. Social suicide was a contagious disease, and no one wanted to be seen near the Vargas family. By Monday, the district attorney, pressured by the public outcry and the audio evidence, announced an investigation into Mateo and Isabella.

But public ruin wasn't enough to satisfy the men Isabella owed money to.

That night, Marcus intercepted a frantic encrypted email from Isabella to her offshore contacts. She promised them the deed to the Miami villa by Friday.

“How is she going to give them a deed she doesn't have?” I asked, staring at the intercepted message.

Marcus pulled up a scanned document on his screen. “By forging it. Look at this. She’s submitted an electronic transfer of ownership to the county clerk in Miami. It has Chloe’s digital signature, notarized by one of Isabella’s corrupt friends.”

“She’s stealing it,” Chloe gasped. “Can we stop the transfer?”

“We could,” Marcus smiled, a predator watching its prey step into a snare. “But forgery of a real estate document across state lines, combined with wire fraud? That’s a massive federal offense. We aren't going to stop her. We are going to let her submit it directly to the FBI.”
