Chapter 12 - Cornering the Coward

Marcus arrived at the airstrip just as Mateo was handing a thick envelope of cash to a nervous-looking pilot.

According to Marcus later, he didn't even draw a weapon. He simply walked onto the tarmac and stood between Mateo and the steps of the private jet.

“Going somewhere, Mateo?” Marcus asked over the whine of the jet engines.

Mateo dropped his duffel bag, his face pale with terror. “Listen, man. I didn't want any of this. It was my mother. She’s crazy. She forced me into it!”

“You stood in the hallway while your wife was beaten,” Marcus stated coldly. “You threatened her at the boathouse. You are exactly the monster your mother raised you to be.”

Mateo lunged forward in a desperate panic, swinging wildly. Marcus easily sidestepped the clumsy punch, grabbed Mateo by the lapels of his expensive jacket, and threw him hard onto the tarmac.

Before Mateo could scramble up, the shriek of police sirens cut through the night air. Four FBI cruisers burst through the gates, tires squealing.

Marcus looked down at the pathetic man on the ground. “Enjoy prison, son.”
