Chapter 13 - Isabella's Fall

The raid on the Vargas estate was broadcast live on the morning news.

Chloe, Marcus, and I sat on my couch, watching the television as federal agents carried boxes of evidence out of the sprawling mansion. Then, the front doors opened.

Isabella Vargas was led out in handcuffs. She wasn't wearing designer jewelry. Her hair was a mess. She looked exactly like what she was: a desperate, broken criminal. She shouted obscenities at the reporters, blaming Mateo, blaming her sisters, blaming everyone but herself.

I felt a profound sense of closure wash over me. The monster who had terrorized my daughter in a locked hotel room was now locked in a cage of her own making.

“It’s over,” Chloe whispered, leaning her head on my shoulder. Tears streamed down her face, but this time, they weren't tears of fear. They were tears of relief.

Marcus sat on Chloe’s other side, wrapping a strong arm around her. “They will never, ever hurt you again.”
