Chapter 5 - The Ambush

“So you admit it,” Chloe said, her voice echoing over the water. “You let her attack me for a house.”

Mateo sneered, stepping closer, aggressively invading her space. “Grow up, Chloe. Real wealth requires sacrifice. Now, you’re going to get in my car, we’re going to a notary, and you’re going to sign the deed over to my mother. If you don't, what happened on our wedding night will look like a warm-up.”

He reached out to grab her arm.

He never made contact.

A high-powered spotlight blazed to life from the boathouse roof, blinding him. The roar of an engine shattered the night as a massive, armored SUV tore out from the tree line, blocking his Porsche. Four men in tactical gear stepped out of the shadows.

Mateo froze, his hands in the air, terrified.

Marcus walked slowly down the wooden stairs of the dock. He didn't run. He strolled, letting the fear marinate.

“Hello, Mateo,” Marcus said, stopping inches from the young man's face.

“Who the hell are you?” Mateo stammered, looking at the armed men.

“I’m the ghost you idiotically invited into your life,” Marcus whispered. He leaned in close. “You have exactly thirty seconds to leave this dock before I stop being civilized. And Mateo? Tell your mother her Colombian friends just got a copy of her real bank statements.”

Mateo sprinted for his car.
