Chapter 5 - The Medical Crisis

Dr. Aris, Julian’s concierge physician, arrived within twenty minutes. He was a discreet man who had treated Julian for everything from stress-induced migraines to a fractured rib from a skiing accident. But he was visibly shaken when he examined little Leo on the plush velvet sofa.
"Julian, this infant is severely dehydrated and hypoglycemic," Dr. Aris muttered, adjusting his stethoscope. "He needs an IV drip immediately. I can set it up here, but if his vitals drop any lower, we are going to the emergency room."
Maya stood in the doorway of the living room, wearing a massive, oversized Yale sweatshirt Sarah had found in Julian's closet. Her wet hair dripped onto her shoulders. When she heard the doctor’s words, panic seized her.
"No hospitals!" Maya yelled, running to stand between the doctor and the baby. "If we go to the hospital, they have to call child services! They’ll take him away!"
Julian intervened, placing a gentle hand on Maya’s shoulder. "Maya, Dr. Aris works for me. He doesn't report to the state unless I tell him to. Leo needs medicine to get strong."
"You promised," she cried, tears finally breaking through her tough exterior. "You promised no one would take him!"
"And I keep my promises," Julian said firmly. He looked at the doctor. "Do whatever you have to do right here. Spare no expense. Bring in equipment if you need it."

Dr. Aris nodded, quickly setting up a pediatric IV line. Maya sat on the edge of the sofa, holding Leo’s tiny hand as the needle went in. She sang a soft, off-key lullaby her mother used to sing, ignoring the tears streaming down her face.
Julian watched from the shadows of the room. He had spent his entire life building an empire of glass and steel, hoarding wealth and power to ensure he would never rely on anyone. Yet, watching this fragile 8-year-old girl protect her brother with the ferocity of a lioness, he realized his empire was completely hollow.
