Chapter 14 - The Checkmate

In the weeks that followed, Julian’s life transformed completely.

The ruthless CEO who used to spend eighty hours a week orchestrating hostile takeovers now left the office strictly at 5:00 PM. The boardroom meetings were punctuated by the sound of Leo babbling in a high chair placed right next to Julian’s seat.

Richard Sterling was indicted on federal fraud charges, and the board of directors, terrified by Julian’s ruthless dismantling of the coup, fell entirely in line. Vanguard Enterprises was stronger than ever, but Julian’s priorities had fundamentally shifted.

Maya was enrolled in an elite private school. For the first few weeks, she hoarded food from the cafeteria in her backpack, a lingering trauma from her time with Marcus. When Julian discovered the stash of stale bread and apples under her bed, he didn't scold her.

Instead, he took her to the massive penthouse pantry, handed her a gold key, and told her that she would forever hold the key to the food. The hoarding stopped the next day.

Uncle Marcus was sentenced to ten years in a federal penitentiary for fraud, assault, and child endangerment. Julian had ensured the prosecution had the most expensive legal support in the state. Marcus Thorne would never see the light of day, nor would he ever be allowed within fifty miles of the children upon his release.

Julian’s private investigator, Miller, had done a spectacular job wiping Marcus’s influence from the earth.

One evening, Julian was sitting in his study, reviewing the final adoption paperwork. The kinship custody had been a temporary stopgap. He wanted it permanent. He wanted them to share his name.

He heard a soft knock on the door. Maya peeked her head in. She was wearing clean, expensive pajamas, holding a math textbook.

"Need help with fractions?" Julian asked, smiling warmly.

"No," Maya said, stepping into the room. "I need to ask you something."
