Chapter 18 - The First Real Sleep

That night, after the guests had left and the estate was quiet, Julian walked down the hallway to check on the kids.

He peaked into Leo’s room. The toddler was sprawled out across his racecar bed, snoring softly, clutching a stuffed bear. Julian pulled the blanket over the boy's shoulders, lingering for a moment to watch him breathe.

He walked to the next room and pushed the door open. Maya was fast asleep in her four-poster bed.

Julian noticed something different. For two years, Maya had always slept curled in a tight ball, facing the door, her body tense and ready to bolt. It was a trauma response from living on the streets, always waiting for the next disaster.

But tonight, she was sprawled out on her back, her arms thrown over her head, completely relaxed. Her face was peaceful.

She felt entirely safe.

Julian leaned against the doorframe, a profound sense of peace washing over his own weary soul. He had spent billions building an empire, crushing rivals, and hoarding power. But none of his achievements mattered compared to this.

He had saved them, yes. But looking at Maya’s peaceful face, Julian knew the absolute truth.

They had saved him.

They had taken a cold, ruthless corporate machine and given him a beating heart. They had given him a reason to build a legacy that meant more than money.

Julian turned off the hallway light, closed the door softly, and finally went to sleep himself—the first real, restful sleep he had experienced in decades.
