Chapter 1 - The Executive Override

Julian Vance did not break eye contact with the little girl. He slowly stood up, his six-foot-two frame towering over the nervous security guard who had his radio halfway to his mouth.
"If you make that call, Miller, you will be emptying your desk by noon," Julian said. His voice never rose above a conversational murmur, but the absolute absolute authority in it made the guard freeze. The radio slipped back into its holster.
The girl, whose name Julian had yet to learn, didn’t flinch at his tone. She simply tightened her grip on the infant. Her knuckles were white, her small wrists trembling from exhaustion and cold.
"I don't need charity," she said, her voice raspy but resolute. "I said I need a job. I can work."
"I know you can," Julian replied, deliberately softening his expression. "But Vanguard Enterprises has a strict policy. All prospective employees must complete an interview over a hot meal. If you want the job, you have to follow protocol."
She eyed him suspiciously, her gaze darting to his thousand-dollar suit and the diamond-encrusted watch on his wrist. She knew exactly what men of wealth were like—they were the landlords who evicted her family, the men who looked away when she begged on the corner. But the baby in her arms gave a faint, shuddering gasp. She didn't have the luxury of pride today.
"Fine," she whispered. "But just milk for Leo. I don't need anything."
Julian gestured to his personal elevator, a sleek glass tube that bypassed the corporate floors and went straight to his private penthouse suite at the top of the tower.

"My name is Julian," he said as the glass doors slid open.
"Maya," she replied, stepping inside with the caution of a cornered animal. She held her brother closer as the elevator shot upward, leaving the whispers of the lobby behind. Julian watched her reflection in the glass, realizing that the multi-billion-dollar merger waiting for him in the boardroom suddenly meant absolutely nothing.
