Chapter 12 - The Interception

Maya scrambled backward, clutching Leo so tightly the baby let out a sharp cry.
"Stay away from us!" Maya screamed, looking frantically around the empty concrete garage for a way out.
"You cost me my meal ticket, you little brat," Marcus snarled, lunging forward and grabbing Maya by the collar of her oversized sweatshirt. "The cops are upstairs. I'm going to take the baby, tell them you ran off, and keep cashing those state checks."
He raised his hand to strike her. Maya squeezed her eyes shut, turning her body to shield Leo from the blow.
But the blow never landed.
A sickening crack echoed through the parking garage, followed by Marcus screaming in agony.
Maya opened her eyes. Marcus was on the ground, clutching a shattered wrist. Standing over him, looking like an angel of death, was Julian Vance.
Julian didn't say a word. He stepped on Marcus’s chest, pinning the heavy man to the concrete. He pulled out his phone and dialed his security chief.
"Garage level C. Bring the police. We have an attempted assault on a minor," Julian said calmly, though his eyes burned with a lethal fury.
Julian hung up the phone and dropped to one knee in front of Maya. He didn't yell at her for running. He didn't ask why she left the penthouse. He simply reached out and pulled her and Leo into a fierce, protective embrace.
"I told you," Julian whispered into her hair, his voice thick with emotion. "No one is ever going to hurt you again. Why did you run?"
"I was ruining your life," Maya sobbed into his expensive suit. "The TV said you were in a scandal. I didn't want you to lose your company."
May you like
Julian pulled back, framing her small, tear-streaked face in his hands.
"Maya, listen to me," Julian said fiercely. "Vanguard is just a company. You and Leo... you are my empire now. And I protect my empire."
