Chapter 15 - The Adoption Papers

Maya walked up to the massive mahogany desk. She wasn't the fragile, terrified girl who had pushed through the brass doors a month ago. She stood taller, her eyes bright, her cheeks full and healthy.
"I heard Sarah talking on the phone today," Maya said, tracing the edge of the desk. "She said you were finalizing adoption papers."
Julian closed his laptop, giving her his full attention. "I am. But only if you want me to, Maya. If you want to keep your parents' last name, I will respect that. You will still live here, and I will still take care of you forever."
Maya looked at him, her dark eyes searching his face.
"My parents were good people," Maya whispered. "But they’re gone. And when we were starving, nobody came for us. Only you."
She walked around the desk and climbed into the leather executive chair next to him.
"I want to be a Vance," she said fiercely. "I want Leo to be a Vance."
Julian felt a lump form in his throat. He had won countless negotiations, closed deals worth billions, and destroyed his enemies without breaking a sweat. But this 8-year-old girl agreeing to be his daughter was the greatest victory of his life.
He reached into his desk drawer and pulled out the thick stack of legal documents, sliding a gold fountain pen across the desk toward her.
"Then sign right here on the dotted line, partner," Julian smiled, blinking back tears.
Maya grabbed the pen and carefully wrote her name on the witness line. When she finished, she threw her arms around Julian’s neck, hugging him with a fierce, unbreakable love.

"Thank you, Dad," she whispered.
Julian hugged her back, his heart completely full. "You never have to thank me, Maya. Never."
