Back in the suburbs, the town was undergoing a metamorphosis. Without the Thorne estate’s influence, the local government began to crack under the scrutiny of the federal investigation.
I was at the park with Maya and little Maya, pushing her on the swing, when Diane Thorne approached me. She looked frail, her hair unkempt, a stark contrast to the woman who used to demand I wear finer jewelry to dinner.
“Sarah,” she started, stopping a few feet away. “Please. Can you talk to the feds? Marcus is... he’s not doing well in holding.”
I didn't stop pushing the swing.
“He’s receiving the due process of the law, Diane. That’s more than he gave to the people he stole from.”

She turned and walked away, her shoulders slumped. I didn't feel a flicker of sympathy. I felt the steady, calm rhythm of a life reclaimed.
