Months later, I stood on the deck of a military transport, headed for an overseas command. My daughter, Maya, was safely in the care of my sister—a life built on stability and love, shielded from the machinations of the Thorne family.
I looked down at the medal pinned to my uniform—a recognition of service that had nothing to do with my marriage and everything to do with my discipline.
I pulled out my phone and deleted the contact for Marcus Thorne. I didn't want to see his name anymore. I didn't want to remember the smell of his scotch or the sound of his empty promises.
