Chapter 1 - The Weight of Gold

The silence on the Thorne estate was heavy, suffocating, and absolute. Marcus stood frozen on the porch, his eyes flickering between the federal prosecutor, the line of armed military police, and me. Elena, meanwhile, had retreated to the shadows of the foyer, her expensive silk shawl clutched around her as if it could shield her from the truth.
“General Miller,” the prosecutor repeated, his voice cutting through the humid air. “Shall we proceed with the findings?”
I stepped forward, the heels of my boots clicking against the driveway—a sound that signaled the end of their charade. I didn’t look at Marcus. I didn’t need to. I looked at Robert and Diane Thorne, the two people I had sacrificed my own financial security to save. Their faces were etched with a sickening realization: the person they had treated as a "desk clerk" had been the only one keeping them from destitution.
“The audit,” I began, my voice echoing with the authority of the Pentagon, “revealed more than just a mortgage payment. It revealed a pattern of systemic embezzlement orchestrated by Elena Vance, with the tacit knowledge of Marcus Thorne.”
Diane let out a sharp, jagged sob. “Marcus? Tell me this is a lie.”

Marcus didn't answer. He was staring at the military detachment behind me. He was a man who understood power, and he understood that he had just crossed a force he couldn't bribe or intimidate.
“You wanted to take my daughter?” I asked, finally turning my gaze to him. “You wanted to declare me unfit? Let’s see what the court thinks of a man who facilitates the theft of his own family’s home to appease his mistress.”
