My return to active duty was not the quiet reinstatement I had hoped for. The exposure of my cover meant my intelligence work was officially neutralized, but my tactical expertise was in high demand.
At the Pentagon, I sat before a panel of stern-faced generals.
“General Miller,” the chairman said, “the situation with Thorne was a catastrophic lapse in operational security. You allowed your cover to be compromised by a civilian.”
“My cover was compromised by a domestic criminal, sir,” I corrected. “And I managed to secure the evidence that linked Thorne’s company to illegal defense contracting. If anything, I turned a liability into an intelligence win.”
The room went silent. They knew I was right. I hadn't just saved a house; I had uncovered a leak in the supply chain that the military had been hunting for years.
