Chapter 8 - The Vault Ambush

The massive winter storm had completely paralyzed the entire downtown sector by the time Julian and his loyal driver, Marcus, arrived at the library.
The freezing city streets were entirely abandoned, looking exactly like a desolate, post-apocalyptic wasteland completely buried under two feet of pure white snow.
Matthew had firmly agreed to remain safely hidden at the cabin, closely guarding a completely broken Arthur Vance while Julian retrieved the damning evidence.
Julian tightly gripped the cold silver key inside his coat pocket, his heart violently pounding a frantic, terrifying rhythm against his ribcage.
They carefully bypassed the heavily locked main entrance, completely utilizing a forgotten, rusted service door that Arthur had explicitly described to them.
The massive, subterranean basement of the historic library was incredibly damp, completely suffocating with the heavy, ancient smell of rotting paper and cold concrete.
Endless rows of archaic, heavy steel safety deposit boxes lined the incredibly dark, shadow-filled back wall of the underground facility.
Julian rapidly scanned the faded, engraved brass numbers until he finally found the specific box clearly marked '774'.
He carefully inserted the ornate silver key into the rusted lock, turning it completely with a loud, highly satisfying metallic click.
He pulled out a heavy, leather-bound journal and a completely sealed, waterproof container holding multiple encrypted digital hard drives.
"We finally have it," Julian whispered victoriously, feeling a massive, completely overwhelming surge of adrenaline rush rapidly through his entire body.
Suddenly, the heavy metal fire door located at the far end of the dark hallway slammed completely shut with a deafening, terrifying echo.
Heavy, highly tactical footsteps immediately began echoing aggressively on the concrete floor, rapidly approaching their isolated position in the darkness.
Three massive men entirely dressed in black tactical gear and wearing ski masks stepped completely into the dim, flickering fluorescent light.
They absolutely were not legitimate police officers; they were Charles’s highly paid, completely ruthless corporate fixers sent to permanently eliminate the threat.
"Hand over the box right now, Mr. Cross, and we will make this incredibly quick," the lead mercenary demanded coldly, raising a heavily suppressed submachine gun.
Marcus reacted with absolutely terrifying, military-grade speed, instantly shoving Julian violently behind a massive row of solid steel filing cabinets.
Gunfire immediately erupted in the enclosed space, the suppressed shots sounding exactly like aggressive, lethal hisses tearing violently through the silent air.
Bright yellow sparks flew wildly as the deadly bullets forcefully struck the metal boxes completely located directly above Julian’s crouching head.
Marcus rapidly drew his own high-capacity sidearm and aggressively returned fire, successfully striking one of the masked attackers directly in the shoulder.
"Run for the service stairs right now!" Marcus yelled at the absolute top of his lungs, providing heavy, continuous cover fire to suppress the remaining attackers.
Julian tightly clutched his mother’s leather journal and the encrypted hard drives completely against his chest like a priceless, fragile child.
He sprinted entirely blindly toward the concrete stairwell, completely ignoring the terrifying sound of bullets actively chipping the concrete walls around him.
He violently burst through the heavy exit door and threw himself completely into the blinding, freezing whiteout of the raging snowstorm outside.
He didn't stop running for a single second until he completely reached the idling, armored SUV hidden securely in the dark alleyway.

Marcus miraculously appeared just a brief moment later, heavily bleeding from a minor graze on his left arm, but completely alive and entirely combat-ready.
"Drive the car right now!" Julian ordered frantically, completely securing the ultimate evidence that would finally end this brutal war.
