Chapter 7 - The Hidden Ledger

Julian aggressively threw open the heavy steel door, keeping the loaded weapon aimed perfectly and squarely at Arthur’s trembling chest.
The older executive looked entirely exhausted and completely broken, his silver hair heavily plastered to his forehead with melting snow and freezing rain.
"I came completely alone, Julian, I swear to God," Arthur pleaded desperately, his voice shaking violently against the howling wind.
"I watched the live broadcast from the shelter, and I immediately knew that I had to find you before Charles’s private mercenaries did."
Julian motioned aggressively with the barrel of the handgun, completely refusing to lower his defensive guard for even a single second.
"Get your hands completely behind your head and walk slowly into the cabin," Julian commanded with absolute, freezing authority.
Arthur immediately obeyed, stepping cautiously into the warm, brightly lit living room of the secluded safe house.
He completely froze in his tracks the absolute second his tear-filled eyes landed on Matthew sitting quietly by the fireplace.
"Matthew, my god, you are actually alive," Arthur choked out emotionally, heavy tears immediately spilling rapidly down his wrinkled cheeks.
Matthew stared back at the older man with a look of pure, unadulterated contempt that could have easily shattered solid glass.
"No thanks to you, Arthur," Matthew replied entirely coldly, his voice completely devoid of any remaining warmth or childhood affection.
Arthur slumped completely forward, dropping heavily onto his knees on the hardwood floor as the crushing weight of his profound guilt finally broke him.
"I swear on my own miserable life that I absolutely never knew Charles was planning to intentionally crash that airplane," Arthur sobbed pathetically.
"He explicitly told me that Matthew had suffered a massive, violent psychotic break and was actively sending highly dangerous, threatening emails to the company servers."
Julian kept his gun raised perfectly steady, completely refusing to let the older man off the hook with a weak, cowardly excuse.
"And what exactly is your excuse for actively helping him illegally sell classified user data to foreign intelligence agencies for twenty years?" Julian demanded loudly.
Arthur flinched violently, completely squeezing his eyes shut as if the harsh words physically struck him in the face.
"Charles completely blackmailed me decades ago," Arthur confessed miserably, staring down at the floorboards.
"I made a massive, illegal financial mistake when the company was just a struggling startup, and he completely held the evidence over my head for thirty years."
Arthur slowly reached a trembling hand into his wet coat pocket, causing Julian’s finger to completely tighten dangerously on the trigger.
"Please don't shoot, I am just giving you exactly what you need to destroy him," Arthur cried out, pulling out a small, highly ornate silver key.
"Your brave mother explicitly confronted Charles about the illegal data sales the exact night before she tragically died in that crash."
"She actively managed to completely steal his physical, handwritten master ledger that recorded every single illegal offshore transaction and foreign buyer."
Arthur carefully slid the small silver key across the smooth hardwood floor until it stopped directly at Julian’s heavy boots.
"She gave that key completely to me for safekeeping, but I was always entirely too much of a coward to ever use it against him," Arthur admitted in absolute shame.

"It completely unlocks a highly secure, private deposit box located deep beneath the old Seattle Central Library downtown."
Julian slowly lowered the weapon, staring intensely at the silver key that held the ultimate, absolute power to completely destroy his father's wicked empire.
